Overview

The “Tree of Life” is an extensive streetscape installation that has revitalized a significant historic district by transforming five blocks of South Omaha, Nebraska. I was involved in the creation of this comprehensive work that aimed to create a dynamic multi-cultural experience for visitors and locals alike through my tenure with RDG Dahlquist Art Studio.

Project Narrative

The “Tree of Life” is a vibrant and dynamic streetscape installation that has revitalized five blocks of South Omaha, Nebraska, by creating a comprehensive experience that celebrates the area’s rich cultural heritage. The project involved a meticulous process of ethnographic and cultural analysis, public-input sessions, and hands-on workshops with diverse groups from the community, resulting in a stunning array of custom paver patterns that articulate the ground, sculptures that serve as gateways, benches, artistic planters, and sculptural lighting.

The project has transformed the streetscape, imbuing it with a colorful and inviting aesthetic that reflects the unique cross-cultural folk art traditions of the area’s major ethnic groups. The custom paver patterns serve as a visual representation of the textile patterns found in the area’s cultural traditions, while the sculptures and lighting elements create a dynamic multi-cultural experience that revitalizes the historic district. The benches and planters provide functional elements that enhance the installation’s livability, encouraging visitors and locals alike to enjoy the vibrant surroundings.

The “Tree of Life” has become a symbol of pride and unity for the South Omaha community, embodying the city’s commitment to honoring its diverse cultural heritage and revitalizing its historic neighborhoods.
