Klopfenstein Amphitheater

Overview

The work realized at RDG Dahlquist Art Studio involved the creation of a performing arts amphitheater constructed from 60 tons of Corten weathering steel, inspired by the use of indigenous bur oak and The Arts & Crafts movement. The amphitheater’s dynamic cantilever spans nearly 60 feet in length, resulting in a commanding view for the audience. It should be noted that this project was undertaken during my tenure at RDG Dahlquist Art Studio.

Project Narrative

The Klopfenstein Amphitheater for the Performing Arts, situated within the serene surroundings of Lowe Park in Marion, Iowa, is a masterpiece of art and architecture. The amphitheater, measuring over 90ft x 60ft x 30ft, is a comprehensive installation that combines various sculptural materials and processes. The structure is sensitively designed to be integrated within the natural landscape and context of the adjacent Arts and Environment Center. As a result, the amphitheater has become a new regional cultural landmark, attracting visitors from far and wide.

The project’s objective was to create a dynamic sculptural icon that would serve as a destination and attract visitors to the park. The amphitheater’s design is versatile and functional, serving as a venue for performances such as concerts and plays, as well as a variety of events such as weddings, yoga sessions, and graduations. The open lawn design of the amphitheater can accommodate up to 1,500 people, making it an ideal space for hosting large events.

One of the most stunning features of the Klopfenstein Amphitheater is the illuminated artwork canopy that follows the intricate profiles of the bur oak leaves. The sculpture, inspired by indigenous bur oaks and the American Arts and Crafts Movement, creates a unique ambiance that engages visitors’ senses and inspires wonder. The canopy is particularly striking at night, creating a magical atmosphere that enhances any event held at the amphitheater.

The Klopfenstein Amphitheater for the Performing Arts is a remarkable fusion of art, architecture, and nature. It is a one-of-a-kind destination that showcases the beauty and creativity of the human spirit. Whether attending a performance, event, or simply strolling through the park, visitors are sure to be captivated by the amphitheater’s blend of art, architecture, and natural beauty.
