Confluence

Overview

The Martindale LRT Station, designed during my tenure at RDG Dahlquist Art Studio, intertwines the physical and symbolic connections between Calgary’s rivers and the Ganges. This station not only serves as a testament to the artistry and ingenuity but also plays a vital role in Calgary’s transportation infrastructure as a crucial link in the city’s light rail transit system.

Project Narrative

At the Martindale LRT Station, a site-specific and sculptural installation was created to provide a meaningful experience for commuters by interweaving physical and symbolic elements of Calgary’s rivers and the Ganges. To encourage community engagement, an experiential learning workshop was established that explored the cultural significance of the area, with a focus on the rich history of the Punjabi community in the region. Students were inspired to imagine traditional symbols of Punjabi and Calgary culture that would float in the linear “river” of the installation.

The resulting screen mural, crafted from ceramics, metal symbols, and LED lighting, was a beautiful testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the community, showcasing the power of collaborative and inclusive design processes. Furthermore, it celebrated the rich history and traditions of the Punjabi community while reminding commuters of the vibrant and diverse culture in the area. The installation exemplifies the power of art and culture to connect people and communities, providing a unique and engaging experience for those waiting on the platforms or moving through the station by train.

The community engagement aspect of the project not only contributed to the creation of a beautiful and meaningful installation but also helped to strengthen community ties and promote cultural understanding. The materials used in the screen mural were carefully selected based on the creative input generated during the experiential learning workshop. The incorporation of these not only highlights the diverse and collaborative nature of the project but also enhances the overall aesthetic and layered sensory experience of the installation. The resulting artwork is a testament to the many benefits of collaborative design processes and community engagement.
